Canada has ordered an investigation after an Air India pilot was removed from duty at Vancouver International Airport for allegedly being under the influence of alcohol before operating a long-haul international flight.
The incident took place on December 23, 2025, involving Air India Flight AI186, scheduled to fly from Vancouver to New Delhi. According to Canadian authorities, the pilot failed two pre-flight breathalyzer tests and was declared unfit to fly, prompting immediate removal from the aircraft.
Canada Orders Investigation
Transport Canada has formally asked Air India to conduct a full internal investigation into the incident and submit a detailed report outlining corrective actions. Aviation regulations in Canada strictly prohibit pilots from operating an aircraft within 12 hours of alcohol consumption or while impaired.
Aviation officials described the matter as a serious safety violation, stressing that passenger safety remains the top priority.
Flight Delayed, Replacement Pilot Assigned
The flight experienced a delay while Air India arranged for a replacement pilot. The aircraft later departed after all safety protocols were met. No passengers were injured, and authorities have not released the pilot’s identity.
In a statement, Air India said it is cooperating fully with Canadian authorities and reiterated its zero-tolerance policy toward breaches of flight safety rules.
Wider Safety Concerns
The incident has renewed focus on crew fitness checks and enforcement of aviation safety standards, particularly for international carriers operating in Canada. Experts say strict monitoring is essential to maintain public trust in air travel.
